The Sabbath continued

Hebrews 4:1-11 (KJV)

4 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Many people will use this passage to do away with the 4th commandment to keep the Sabbath day as Holy. This epistle to the Hebrews is presenting the Seventh day Sabbath rest as a symbol of the spiritual rest Jehovah grants to those willing to enter into fellowship with him.

Israel largely failed to enter into Jehovah's spiritual rest, and they often ignored the Sabbath observance that symbolized it. Believers in this passage are admonished to accept the spiritual rest of which the weekly Sabbath is the symbol (Verse 9 and 10).

The message here in Hebrews underlines the Old Testament observance of the Sabbath as a sign of holiness (Exodus 31:13, Ezekiel 20:12). Sabbath observance is a sign of our holy relationship with Jehoshua and it is the means by which the relationship is enriched.

Revelation 12:17, 14:12, 22:14 all clearly state that the true Church in the last days will be made up of believers who keep the commandments of Jehovah as well as the faith and testimony which is the spirit of prophecy (Rev 19:10) of His Son Jehoshua. This includes the 4th commandment to keep the Sabbath day Holy.

  1. Hi Kayfabe,

I am disgusted by the commenters accusations against you on BB's blog. You are DEFINITELY a true believer in Jesus. You comments have always been uplifting to me.

Recently, I feel so discouraged reading BB's blog. All the bickering and accusations. I love BB, but because of the commenters, I can't read her blog anymore. :(

    1. Hi jl,

Thank you so much for your encouraging and edifying words, they mean a lot to me. It really warmed my soul to read your comments. Your encouraging words were much needed after being attacked over there. I am only so strong. One thing as brothers and sisters we need to remember, is not devour each other. The enemy is already trying to do that and when we do it to each other we are actually helping him. I think there is room for brother's and sister's to have differing views on scripture. For me, as long as someone doesn't deny the Father and the Son and they acknowledge the work of their Holy Spirit and they preach the Gospel which is the Virgin birth, death, burial, bodily resurrection and ascension of Jehoshua to the right hand of the Father then we are brethren. We have a loving Father who desires all to be saved and we should have that same desire. We know it's not gonna happen that everyone gets saved but that should be our heart. Without love our Christianity is clanging cymbals. Thank you again for your kind words jl!

    2. Hi Kayfabe,

I happy to hear that you are encouraged! Your words are correct, that if we believe in the foundational beliefs, we are brethren.

You are also correct. Without love, our Christianity is clanging cymbals. I will pray for those commenters, that they will spiritually leave the church of Ephesus and become the church of Philadelphia.

  2. Amen jl,

Yes we always have to remember to exhibit the Saviour's Love. Your right, we have to pray for those that aren't showing it to reintroduce themselves to the grace of God.
