“Thou art my Son, this day have I
begotten thee”
The above
words from Psalm 2:7 are a coronation hymn of an Israelite King. It was at
Jesus baptism that He heard these words from God. Two days after His baptism,
an Israelite without guile named Nathanael confessed that Jesus was the Son of
God and the King of Israel (John 1:49).
It was 5
days before the Passover and near the time of Jesus passion that many in
Jerusalem welcomed Jesus as the King of Israel proclaiming “Hosanna, blessed is
the King of Israel that cometh in the name of Jehovah” (John 12:13).
Although
many in Jesus time rejected Him, there was a remnant that had faith that He was
indeed the promised eternal King that would establish the throne & Kingdom
of David forever.
It was only
a few days after this proclamation by these faithful Israelites that their
anointed King would be crucified on a cross:
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished:
and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30).
To some it
may have seemed that all hope was lost as their King was put to death but God
the Father had better plans. After three days in the grave, by the power of the
God’s Holy Spirit, Jesus was raised from the dead:
“And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more
to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies
of David.” (Acts 13:34).
As a result of Christ being resurrected from the dead He received the
sure mercies of David. What are the sure mercies of David? The first sermon
recorded after the Son of God’s ascension by the apostle Peter answers this for
us:
“ Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the
patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us
unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an
oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would
raise up Christ to sit on his throne” (Acts 2:29-30).
The sure mercies of David are his throne, crown and Kingdom, all received
by the Son of God upon His resurrection and ascension into heaven. Let’s go to
heavenly throne room to witness the enthronement of the Son of God, Jesus
Christ:
“ But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is
for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.”
(Hebrews 1:8).
The
enthronement of Jesus Christ on the throne of David inaugurated His Kingdom.
The question is friend, do you want to be part of it? The sure mercies of David can be yours also!
